Your New Year's Resolution: A More Organized Home

|

When decorations are cleaned up, the family has returned home, and the hustle and bustle of the holiday season winds down, you’re probably beginning to choose your New Year’s resolutions. Whether you’re trying to eat healthier, hit the gym more often, or decrease your screen time, we know New Year’s resolutions can seem daunting and time-consuming. If organizing your space is what you choose to focus on for 2019, Security Self Storage has a few great tips to sprinkle throughout your day that will make reorganizing a breeze.

Make Your Bed

Making your bed is a great way to start your day in the right direction. Sound easy enough? That’s because it is. Never underestimate the power of something so simple. When you consistently dedicate an extra minute or two every morning to smooth your covers and fluff up your pillows, you’re creating a positive, everyday habit. By starting your day this way, getting into the swing of organizing your space piece by piece won’t seem like such a daunting task.

Set a Timer

Getting rid of clutter and putting things in their proper place throughout your entire house may seem a bit overbearing at first. That’s why setting a timer is the perfect way to move things along if you’re someone who tends to get distracted. Set the timer for 10 or 15 minutes and work on one specific location in your home until the timer goes off. Once you’re done, decide if you want to stay in the same spot or if you would rather move to another space.

Organize Your Mail

The age of email is very much upon us, but somehow we still end up with a disorganized pile of junk mail sitting in the corner of the house. Set a designated space for your mail in an easily accessible part of your home, and make sure it goes there after each trip to the mailbox. Recycle mail you deem as “junk” right away and deal with the rest as soon as you have a chance to prevent it from, quite literally, piling up.

Inventory Your Kitchen

Who doesn’t have an excessive amount of Tupperware containers that are missing lids or are just in bad shape? When you find the culprits that are clogging up your container section, get rid of them. What’s the point of keeping storage around that you will most certainly never use again? Instead, grab a few of these reusable silicone food bags for an environmentally-friendly alternative  they’re oven, dishwasher, refrigerator, and microwave safe, too.

Start a Donation Box

Found an old sweater you haven’t worn in years? What about that set of golf clubs that’s been sitting in your garage since you moved? Here’s your chance to get rid of the things you no longer use, while also helping others. Donate clothing items to your local women’s shelter or homeless shelter. The Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, and the Humane Society in your city are all great places to give back to people, and animals in need. If you absolutely cannot part with your unused items, take advantage of your unit at Security Self Storage
